Projects
The Moving Smile
With funding from Smile Train, SunEko is implementing ‘The Moving Smile’ project to integrate artistic performances, innovative approaches, psychosocial support, and research to address the exclusion of cleft children. The project focuses on alerting communities to access the free service, clearing up the causes of cleft through artistic performances, identifying and addressing needs & empowering cleft communities.
Through Social mobilization, the project aims to tackle individual and community norms that are barriers to cleft communities and reduce the stigma by engaging more robust and aggressive marketing tools. The use of art, artistic performance, and art therapy for children, youth, and adults with clefts and their families will have an enormous impact in terms of psychological support, awareness creation in the community, and an increased number of cleft people referred for surgery.
Projects
Events
Throughout the one-year project, there have been 14 awareness creation event days, excluding psychosocial interventions. Through these events, the project was able to reach multiple cities that had different cultures, norms, languages, and living states

Art-based Therapy
Community Circle
Tour
This psychotherapy employs visual arts as its primary means of expression and interaction. It is used to enhance mental well-being, foster self-awareness, control behavior and strengthen interpersonal skills, and boost self-esteem.
Community Circle is a recovery oriented technique that gathers individuals impacted by an occurrence to communicate, listen, and collaborate to repair harm and and build relationships
An excellent approach to inform the public about the issue and its repercussions is through a cleft and palate awareness tour. Visits to neighborhood hospitals, schools, and other facilities that assist people with cleft and palate disorders should be part of the trip.

Street Shows
Our Street shows created awareness on cleft lip and palate and typically involve various activities, such as performances, educational talks, and interactive activities. They include circus, music, and dance to educate the public about cleft lip and palate.
Cycling Event
This cycling event is designed to raise awareness about cleft lip and palate. Participants will ride a set distance. The event took place on a designated route with rest stops along the way. At each rest stop, participants hands out communication materials to raise awareness
Summer Camp
Our Summer camp program created a chance and an opportunity for children to have fun and learn new skills in a safe and supervised environment. It typically involves activities such as arts and crafts, sports, outdoor games, and more.

Art-Based Therapy and Community Circles
As one of the Comprehensive Cleft Care packages, Psychosocial support is an area that needs to be integrated more into all the health care systems. Children born with clefts may have facial differences, visible scars, and/or differences in their speech that can lead them to feel inferior and, in many cases, experience self-esteem issues. The project encompasses regular Cleft community circles(support group) and Art-based therapy sessions. Art-based therapy is a form of psychosocial service that uses art media as its primary mode of communication. The overall aim is to enable a cleft child to effect change and grow on a personal level through the use of artistic tools in a safe and enabling environment. The psychosocial community circles create a space for affected parents to get professional support and form a support group that can allow them to be open about their struggles as parents/caregivers of a child born with cleft lip and palate.

Projects
Tour
Since one of the project's goals was to break the stigma and misconception around CLP, several grounds had to be covered. 5 Regions and over 15 cities were included in the Moving Smile regional tour. The main aim of the tour was to create awareness and consciousness about cleft lip and palate while promoting Smile Train and its services. Along the way, the toll-free cell number was introduced through the moving smile truck poster and audio-based promotions. The Suneko circus team was a big part of the tour, as there were circus performances at city stops to capture the attention of the local people there. Distributed materials such as flyers, brochures, and posters were vital to the tour's success.

The Truck

Projects
The Truck
The Moving Smile Truck is a custom-designed truck that looks like a train that resembles the type found on Smile Train’s logo. As the name suggests, it stands for creating Smiles through its rails everywhere it goes. The project aims that this branded truck can catch the eyes of every age, culture, and Ethnic group as it launches its Cleft Lip/Palate awareness-creation tour to the different regions of Ethiopia. The train-looking truck, with its train horn sound and aesthetics, is accompanied by SunEko’s Circus team. The body of The Moving Smile Truck also holds the face of ‘Abity’, the project’s hero character, who was born with a Cleft Lip.

Abiti and Aziza

Projects
Abiti and Aziza
Abiti teaches children born with the same condition to be strong, resilient, champions, and rise above despite challenges. The character is also created to fight against Stigmatization and the lack of sufficient awareness in our community regarding families, relatives, and children born with Cleft Lip/Palate. Abiti shares his stories on social media and other platforms with his friend Aziza who supports and advocates for Abiti’s cause.
